Learning to Wait

We have a big white dog called Henry. He's been part of our home since he was eight weeks old. He's seven now. As most lab pups are, he was a bit of a handful--busy, curious and stubborn. He was also playful, smart and loving. I don't think he has ever met a stranger.

We tried to be worthy of him, taking him to puppy school and obedience classes. He was always the smartest and bravest one in the class. But he could also get into mischief.

Something he struggled with then was waiting. He'd quiver and whine and then just couldn't wait. He'd run for whatever had his attention. We didn't give up on him. And the training continued. Over time, he got good at just about everything and he is now very good at waiting.

He knows he can trust us. He knows we will not let him down. Food and water will appear in his bowl. And treats are often at hand. If he needs to go out, he just waits and watches us until we get the message. If he gets desperate, he will whine and we will be quick to let him out.

This morning, I watched him wait outside my sliding glass door. He was patient and calm. There was no barking or fidgeting. He knew all he had to do is wait and I would come and let him in. He had no fear that all was not well. He knew that if he waited, I would come.

Henry is a beautiful example of learned trust. I wish I were so trusting of my Heavenly Father. I should be. He has never let me down. He's always been there when I've needed Him. And scripture assures me that He always will be.

Deuteronomy 31:6 says, "So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you or abandon you."

Praise the Lord for His Word is honest and true. I am learning to wait and to trust.

Grace and peace to you,

Bonnie Leon
